Post-High School Career
Tom followed brother John into Boxing and won the National AAU Welterweight as a 14-year-old in 1972 and the AAU Light Middleweight as a 15-year-old. He reached the National Golden Gloves semifinals in 1974 and a year later became Champion, beating Michael Spinks in the finals at 165lbs. Mike Tyson was the only other boxer to beat Spinks. In 1975 Tom was on the U.S. National Team that competed in Russia and went to Mexico for the Pan-Am Games where he lost to a 29-year-old Cuban with over 400 fights in his resume. Tom turned professional in 1976 and won eight of nine bouts fought.
