Denny Sullivan: A Legacy of Excellence in Track & Field Coaching

Denny 'Sully' Sullivan (shown at left with his son, Shannon) dedicated his life to nurturing young athletes at Grant High School, instilling values of perseverance, teamwork and integrity. His commitment to excellence has left a lasting impact on the Portland Interscholastic League community. More details about Denny's life can be found here.

Recognizing PIL Students For Academic & Athletic Achievement

From 2022 to 2024, outstanding student-athletes from PIL high schools benefited from financial awards from the Denny Sullivan Scholarship program. The annual award recognized these young men and women for their academic achievements, athletic performance and commitment to their communities. Beginning in 2025, the Denny Sullivan Foundation shifted its focus to the annual PIL Hall of Fame Induction Banquet, where it serves as Title Sponsor.

Scholarships Were Awarded to 7 PIL Student-Athletes

In its three years, the Denny Sullivan Scholarship program awarded $10,000 and $7,500 scholarships to Portland high school student-athletes who finished first and second, respectively, in the selection process.

Nominees were selected by school athletic directors, coaches and counselors based on their academic and athletic achievements, financial need and community involvement. Priority was given to students who planned to attend a college in Oregon.

A special thanks to the members of the Denny Sullivan Scholarship Committee -- Butch Lumby, Tom Haley, John Bakkensen and Shannon Sullivan -- for their work evaluating all applications and supporting the seven PIL student-athletes selected for scholarships.
