Commentary

High school sports sets forth an indelible path on the road of life for each athlete. Induction into the Hall of Fame is not only recognition of the athlete, but the many relatives, coaches, mentors and administrators that contributed to the achievement and memory as well. One coach has special meaning to me—Walt Aldridge, my track coach. In 1964, he taught me what it means to “never give up on yourself.” At age 93 this year, Walt still attends every Washington high school class reunion. It's an honor to have him here again tonight [at the 2013 Induction Banquet]. (Walt was recognized from the podium.)
