Commentary
The PIL and Cleveland community had a profound impact on who I have become and shaped my view of Portland as a great place to raise a family. After graduating from the University of Oregon and moving to San Francisco, I made a promise to myself to move back and put my roots down in Portland. Fourteen years later I made good on that promise, and am lucky enough to have a wonderful family to share it with.
I owe much of who I am to the strength and generosity of the Cleveland alumni network. My first jobs, internships, and my current role were all landed with the assistance of Cleveland alumni. I will never forget the impact of the great coaches, faculty, and friends who competed along my side. Pasche, Dyer, Harris, Zerba, and Nelson (amongst many others) were leaders that shaped me as an athlete, but more importantly as a person.
Competing at Cleveland was often done as an underdog, and our coach's lessons on preparation, grit, and persistence have translated quite well to the “real”world. One of my fondest memories on the football field was seeing my brother, a sophomore starting at LB, in the huddle while we called the defense. Nothing can beat playing ball with your brother.
It goes without saying I couldn't have done much without the help of my parents, Stan and Laurie, who left their own marks on the PIL in the 70’s. Outside of Cleveland I have become close friends with many of those I competed against in the PIL. It is always great to get together with the fellas, remembering and laughing about our times competing in fields throughout the city. In the next chapter, I look forward to watching our children compete, and continue the great tradition of PIL athletics. Go Warriors!
