Richard (Dick) Vavrek

Post-High School Career
PIL Hall of Fame Merit Award Recipient, 2005
Richard "Dick" Vavrek has spent decades helping reshape youth sports in Southeast Portland. Beginning his volunteer coaching journey in 1962, Dick dedicated his life to proving to young athletes that they had immense worth. Operating in a Marshall High School area that held the highest number of single mothers on welfare in Oregon at the time, he did far more than teach athletic fundamentals. He actively built his players' self-esteem, instilled discipline and personally paid for physical examinations and registration fees for families who otherwise could not afford to participate.
His exceptional leadership on the sidelines directly fueled the golden eras of local prep sports and built a powerful championship pipeline. Dick famously coached the Marshall High-feeder Pop Warner football team, Mayfair Realty, to three consecutive championships, an effort that proved instrumental to the varsity program's ultimate success under legendary PIL Hall of Fame Head Coach Darrell Everett. Beyond the gridiron, Dick spent years mentoring local ballplayers on the diamond as the coach for Marshall’s American Legion summer baseball team and Marshall Babe Ruth.
Dick’s enduring impact is permanently etched into the achievements of the lives he touched, most notably serving as the primary athletic inspiration for Marshall High standout and fellow PIL Hall of Famer Ross Baker, as well as Marshall athletic standout Jeff Owens. In ultimate recognition of his massive contribution to the community, a permanent monument to his legacy was established in September 1999, when the athletic field along Holgate Boulevard at Lents Park was officially dedicated in his honor. Dick Vavrek did not just coach games; he changed life trajectories, leaving behind a profound legacy of mentorship, care and distinguished service to the PIL community.
