Commentary

It’s an incredible honor to be an inductee into the Portland Interscholastic League Hall of Fame. I’m deeply grateful for this recognition — not just for the award itself, but for what it represents: the people, the memories, the competition, and the community that shaped me along the way.

Being a student athlete at Marshall High School taught me discipline, teamwork, grit and resilience. Whether it was early morning practices, intense rivalries, playing in state tournaments or the quiet moments of reflection after a hard-fought game, those experiences became the foundation of who I am today — on and off the field.

To my coaches, especially Coach Ken Trapp, who pushed me beyond what I thought I was capable of — thank you for believing in me. To my teammates, thank you for your support, your drive, and your friendship. To my family, who supported my interests and showed up rain or shine — you were my first fans and my constant source of strength. Mom and Mike, I wish you were here to share this award with me.

I’m humbled to be included among so many legends who have come through the PIL. It’s a reminder that the legacy of high school sports is not just in the records we set, but in the lives we touch, the lessons we learn, and the communities we uplift and impact.

What my experience at Marshall gave me wasn’t just a jersey or a letterman’s patch — it gave me a roadmap for leadership, perseverance, and service. It showed me the value of education beyond the classroom and the power of adult mentors in a young person’s life. That realization is what ultimately led me to pursue a career in education. I wanted to give back the same way others gave to me. I wanted to be the voice that encouraged, the hand that lifted, and the presence that mattered in a student’s life — just as the Marshall community had been for me.

To be recognized by the very league that inspired my journey is both humbling and deeply meaningful. It reminds me that every student we teach, coach, or mentor carries the potential to impact future generations—just as the PIL did for me.

To the current and future student-athletes in Portland: Play with heart, lead with humility, and never underestimate the power of sports to build character, connection, and purpose. The lessons you learn in high school will carry you far — on and off the field.

This honor isn’t just mine — it’s shared with everyone who stood beside me, believed in me, and helped me grow. I accept it with gratitude and pride. Thank you!
