Excelled in baseball at University of Oregon. Played seven seasons with New York Yankees, four seasons with Cleveland Indians. Competed in six World Series and eight Major League All-Star games. Was American League MVP in 1942. Posthumously inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame, 2009
