Commentary
Thank you, Ken Trapp, for nominating both my sister, Rhonda, and me. I can now say I’m in the club with my wife, Kristy, and sister-in-law, Karyl.
I grew up lucky enough to have two sets of parents that got along great and supported me throughout all my playing days. My father was a diehard baseball/basketball and football fan, while my step-dad enjoyed skiing, tennis, soccer and football too. I loved them all!
I chose to focus on baseball and football and had great coaching along the way. My Little League coach, Gary Kinnee, made a huge impact onme. He loved the game as I did and had a passion for winning. He followed me up through the ranks and All-Stars.
In high school, we were blessed with Coach Mike Doty. He came to Marshall in ‘86 and took over the baseball program and eventually the football team the following year. Coach Doty won PIL coach of the year in both sports in ‘87. Coach did everything for us in both sports. He taught us to put in the extra work, focus on details, have pride in what you do amongst many other things. I am truly grateful he was our coach.
I chose Linfield College and played one year of football and 4 years of baseball. I played shortstop and pitched. My most memorable moment was being the winning pitcher and hitting a homerun in our Conference Championship game vs Whitworth in ‘92.
After college I started a family delivery business with my father, payed one year of professional baseball for the Johnstown Steal in the Frontier League then played 15+ years of fastpitch softball travelling all over the US and Canada. I won the Multnomah Athletic Club bench press competition in ‘95 and the open racquetball championship in 2007.
